The Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor
There are over 1600 websites linked to the word 'Bhaktivedanta'.  The word comes from the name of the leader of this branch of Hinduism, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta  Swami Prabhupada, who was born in 1896.  You will sometimes find him called Srila Prabhupada.  For background reading to the visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor, you might like to find out more about him.   Try visiting:

Britain Since 1930

Below are some Websites that you may find useful in this term's topic on Britain since 1930.

BBC History
This BBC site has a wealth of information. Amongst the things you will find are:

  • news stories and recordings from the BBC Archives for the days leading up to the start of WW2;
  • stories and sound clips about children being evacuated during the war;
  • stories and sound clips about events during WW2.

US Navy
A US site dealing with ships during the WW2. Fine if you want lots of information about Atlantic battles, and from the US point of view!

Modern Art
Try this link [www.artcyclopedia.com]to find art work from the 20th Century artists. Names you might look for include Miro, Picasso, Dali, Pollock as well as Monet, Matisse and Van Gogh. Another art collection well worth visiting is at the Web Museum, Paris

Boys' Clothes
And what about clothes during the 20th Century? Well, this is the site that deals with Historical Boys' Clothing. If you search carefully enough you'll even find the Breakspear School Uniform! and a section contributed by one of our own past pupils when he worked on this very topic. There doesn't appear to be a similar site for girls. If you find one let us know so we can add it.  (Unfortunately, since first including this link, some sections of this site require a payment, including the contribution from a past Breakspear pupil.  However, you may still find it useful!)

The Tate Gallery
Why not take a virtual trip to the Tate?  This site contains descriptions of thousands of it's pictures and a large number of photographs.  (When visited on 7/10/05 there were problems with displaying the pictures, hopefully this will be resolved in the near future!

The Isle of Wight

General

To help you with your work, here are some themes you might like to follow up:

Photographs
Pictures are available at the Isle of Wight uk.com site. On there first page there are a number of 'royalty free' thumbnail pictures. You can download the full size pictures and use them as you wish. More pictures are available on pages 2 & 3. These are copyright though, so you can only use them for your own personal work. On page three there are links to quite spectacular aerial photographs including some geographic features.

Yet more pictures at the Isle of Wight uk.com site can be found in its Tour section. Not only are some of the important attractions pictured, but details are provided.

Someone called Dave Parker also has a picture gallery. There are some very good photographs. He's also got a lot of other information on the Island (see below).

History
If you need some background information on the Island, again the Isle of Wight uk.com site could prove useful. This particular section has no pictures, but there are plenty elsewhere on the site, especially on its Tour pages.

General Information
Dave Parker's site have a wealth of information about the Island. In addition to the picture gallery, mentioned above, there is much else that is useful including maps.

Netguides.co.uk has a useful section on the Isle of Wight, though it is targeted at the tourist.

Similarly aimed at the tourist is Wight-on-line. However, if you can cope with the advertising, there are links to lots of things that may be useful.

Lighthouses
The Isle of Wight was quite important for its lighthouses. You can find more about them by clicking on the Trinity House web site.  There's an index with pictures and links to further information about all the English Lighthouses in current use.

Mills
There are several mills on the Isle of Wight.  At Bembridge there is a  windmill, while Yafford has a watermill.

Lifeboats
This could be useful, there are also links to just about everywhere on the island including the history and photos on the Bembridge lifeboat

Castles and Royal Homes
Several places are a 'must' when visiting the Isle of Wight. Carisbrooke Castle is one of them. At this site there is plenty of information on castles in England (including their ghosts!)

Osbourne House, built by Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, is another place to go. You might like to also try this site, which has more pictures: Osbourne House 2   hundreds of pictures of Queen Victoria and her family  There are hundreds of photographs of Queen Victoria on a special site that also includes a rare picture of her smiling!

There is also a useful one page biography of Queen Victoria.

The Ferry
Of course getting to the Isle of Wight involves crossing water and so you need a ferry. Perhaps you will be using the hovercraft. You can even find out what times they sail by checking out the Hovertravel site.

The water around the Island is tidal. The time of the high tide changes slightly each day. The BBC provides a simple tide table for the next six days.  You can also get one from the Admiralty

Weather
If you want to know what the forecast will be just before setting off, you could check with the Met Office.

And Finally…
… how about a race around the island, powered by how much you've learnt!
