Y6 meet Author Abi Elphinstone
Last Thursday, some Year 6 children were invited by Ickenham Library to meet Abi Elphinstone, a new author. The children were enthralled and captivated by Abi as she, enthusiastically, spoke to the children about how most of her ideas for the plots, settings and characters featured in her books The Dreamsnatcher and the more recent publication The Shadow Keeper had come from real life experiences. Abi started by talking and sharing photographs of her adventures in Africa and Mongolia. She explained this provided her with inspiration. She showed the children different objects she had found and featured in her stories e.g. sheep’s ankle bones, runes, a sling shot, an African mask and a warm hat made of fox fur. She explained that some ideas had come from her childhood . An encounter with a wild cat, when she was a child walking in a dark wood, led to her using this animal as a main character. Abi made the children laugh by explaining how she had named one of her main characters after a shower gel she had bought from TK Max and as a child she wanted to grow up to be a unicorn! Abi shared that her first few books had been rejected 97 times before The Dreamsnatcher had been accepted by a publisher. She encouraged the children to work hard and follow their dreams because eventually they will succeed.
